Jiang Zemin Meets DPRK VisitorChina is ready to join hands with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to inherit the tradition and usher in the future to further bilateral traditional friendship in the new century, President Jiang Zemin said Tuesday. At a meeting with a delegation headed by Secretary General Kim Yun Hyok of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly, Jiang said China has always valued its traditional friendly ties of cooperation with the DPRK. Jiang welcomed the delegation to come to take part in the 40th anniversary celebrations for the signing of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance between the two countries. The treaty, signed by the elder-generation leaders of the two countries, laid a solid foundation for the advancement of bilateral relations, he said. Facts have proved that the treaty conforms with the fundamental interests of the two peoples and has helped maintain peace and stability in the region, he added. In the past decades, he continued, the Sino-DPRK friendship has gone through the ups and downs of the international situation, and made steady progress. Jiang expressed his thanks for the letter of congratulation sent by Kim Jong Il, general-secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) Central Committee, on the 80th founding anniversary of the Communist Party of China and his attendance at a celebration banquet held at the Chinese embassy in Pyongyang. Kim Yun Hyok passed on Kim Jong Il's best wishes to Jiang, who asked to return his greetings. Kim Yun Hyok said the treaty played a great role in promoting the DPRK-China ties, and it is of great importance to hold commemorative activities on this occasion. Kim Jong Il's presence at the Chinese embassy's banquet and his two visits to China at the turn of the century have contributed greatly to bilateral relations, he said. He stressed that the WPK and the DPRK government will make unremitting efforts to promote the friendship initiated by the elder-generation leaders. On the Korean peninsula issue, Jiang said that China, as a close friend and neighbor, is very concerned about the latest developments of the situation. The summit meeting between the north and south of Korea last year was an remarkable event in the peninsula and the world as well, which served to ease the tension and improve bilateral relations, Jiang said. He said China will continue to firmly support the north and the south to improve relations through dialogue and negotiations, and steadfastly support the ultimate realization of peace and reunification in the peninsula. Kim said that the joint declaration between the two sides of the Korean peninsula issued on June 15, 2000 paved the way for the independent reunification of the two sides. The DPRK will, in the spirit of the joint declaration, eliminate all obstacles to accomplish the reunification, said Kim. Kim and his party arrived here Tuesday morning as guests of the Chinese government.
