Mayors of Beijing and Moscow Hold Hands

Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov met with Liu Qi, mayor of Beijing, at the municipal government office in Moscow July 9. Luzhkov briefed Liu the preparatory work of the 112th plenary session of IOC, and they exchanged views on strengthening cultural and trade ties between the two cities.

Liu told Luzhkov Beijing's achievements in economic development and city construction, saying economic cooperation with Moscow is on a good track and bilateral relations have been strengthened. Cultural cooperation can be further widened by means of cultural relic show.

The Beijing Culture Festival, staged in Moscow not long ago, turned out a big event fully reported by local televisions and stirred up warm responses from Moscow residents. Luzhkow said that friendly relations between Beijing and Moscow have developed smoothly and this year has seen an apparent expansion in the cooperation between the two cities.

Moscow government would guarantee a favorable convening of the plenary session of IOC, and no disturbance should be made to the opening ceremony and other activities by political activities, Luzhkov says.

Present at the meeting were Du Deyin and Zhang Mao leaders of Beijing and also Wu Tao, Chinese ambassador to Russia.
