Government Officials Caught in Project Graft

Some 30 officials in south China' s Guangdong provincial government departments have been caught grafting when handling a highway building project, according to a press conference jointly held by the provincial Party Committee for Discipline Inspection and the Supervision Department.

Jiang Qinglin, deputy secretary of the committee and director of the department, said that a sum of 6.861 million yuan (827,000 U.S. dollars) plus 1.12 million HK dollars (943,000 U.S. dollars) was involved in the graft.

He said that those accepting bribes related to building the highway between Shenzhen and Shantou, two leading economic cities in the province, will be severely punished according to law.

So far, four of the officials have been filed by the Provincial People's Procuratorate and will be sued soon.
