Yemeni President Receives Message from US Counterpart

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh on Monday received a message from his United States counterpart George W. Bush on the situation in the Middle East and the bilateral ties.

The message was conveyed by US Assistant Secretary of State and Mideast envoy William Burns during his meeting with Saleh, the Yemeni News Agency reported.

The message dealt with the latest developments of the regional situation and the bilateral ties, the news agency said.

During the meeting, Saleh stressed the need to implement the Mitchell report, calling for pressures to be put on Israel for it to abide by the relevant United Nations resolutions on the Mideast conflict, it added.

Burns spoke highly of the relations and cooperation between the U.S. and Yemen in the investigations into the bombing of the USS Cole destroyer, fighting terrorism, and the recent security measures taken to protect U.S. nationals in Yemen.

The U.S. official reiterated his country's support for Yemen in various fields, including security, economy and democracy.

Burns arrived in Sanaa on Sunday after visits in Beirut and Damascus.
