China Beats Japan for Bronze Medal in Women Junior Basketball

China who lost all three preliminary games, outscored Japan 82-61 to take the bronze medal, while the United States remained undefeated to take the championship game against Brazil 90-67 in the USA Basketball Junior International Invitational Sunday in Washington.

Song Liwei scored 26 points from 12-19 attempts, pacing China that lost to Japan 81-84 in the preliminary for their first win in the four-national women's basketball tournament.

Zhang Xiaoni added 20 points while another pair of Bai Xue and Huang Jing contributed 13 and 11 points respectively for China that outscored their Japanese peers in all four periods.

From 29-16 advantage, China entered the second half 46-30 and increased their lead by outscoring Japan 15-12 and 21-19 in the last two periods to seal the victory.

Oga Yuko who scored 39 points in their first meet, was cornered for 12 points from 5-20 shots, while Asaki Shigeta and Taki Nao added 16 and 14 apiece for Japan.

In the championship game, Diana Taurasi had 24 points to pace the United States for a 90-67 victory over Brazil, with Alana Beard and Shameka Christon adding 19 and 15 points respectively.

Erika De Souza led Brazil with 20 points.
