HK Chief Executive to Set Off for United States

Tung Chee Hwa, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), will set off for Washington DC Tuesday to meet with President Bush, US officials and members of the US Congress on July 11.

Tung will proceed on leave from July 12 until July 19.

Before his departure, Tung told reporters that the purpose of his visit is really to introduce to President Bush and his colleagues how well Hong Kong has done since the return and how well Hong Kong has successfully implemented the "one country, two systems" principle.

He will also explain to him economic developments in the past few years and what to look forward to in the future.

"I would particularly emphasize on the importance of Hong Kong when China accedes to WTO in the near future. I think Hong Kong can play a very important role for American businesses who want to go into the very big Chinese market," he said.
