Sudan, Egypt Call for Mideast Free of Weapons of Mass DestructionSudan and Egypt on Sunday called for the Middle East to be free of the weapons of mass destruction and urged Israel to immediately end closure and liquidation policies against the Palestinians. The two countries made the call in a joint communique, released at the end of the meetings of the Higher Sudanese-Egyptian Joint Committee. Sudan and Egypt said that Israel should sign the nuclear Non- Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and that its nuclear facilities must be subject to inspections of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Regarding the tragic situation in the Palestinian territories, the two countries urged Israel to immediately stop collective punishment, closure and liquidation policies against the Palestinians. They further called for resumption of the peace talks and implementation of the relevant United Nations resolutions and the land-for-peace principle in a bid to restore the Palestinian people's legitimate rights, especially the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. Sudan and Egypt categorically rejected Israeli settlement activities, urging the U.N. and the international community to protect the Palestinian people from Israeli aggressions. A just and comprehensive peace can not be achieved in the Middle East unless Israel fully withdraws from Syria's Golan Heights, Lebanon's Shebaa Farms and the occupied Palestinian territories, they said.
