BOC Reduces Non-performing loans

The Bank of China (BOC) said Sunday it cut down the ratio of its non-performing loans by 1.77 percentage points in the first half this year after reducing the ratio from 39 percent to 28.8 percent at the end of last year.

This is the result of a series of measures taken by the bank to enhance its internal risk control system, a bank spokesman said.

So far, the BOC has established a risk control system characterized by "unified credit extension, separation of approval from credit extension, approval by different levels and clarified responsibilities and rights," he said.

Supervision and evaluation of the quality of newly extended loans have also been strengthened, and a responsibility restraint mechanism has been established in the bank, the spokesman added.

Other measures include improvement of post-lending management, establishment of special recovery teams, and improvement of an evaluation system on the recovery of non-performing loans.
