College Entrance Exams Continue for 2nd DayChina's national college entrance examinations are continuing for a second day, despite adverse weather conditions across the country. Some of the examinees are quite advanced in years, but young at heart in their quest for further study. At 72, Wang Xia is one of the oldest examinees taking the challenge. He is taking his exam with a group of teenagers at this high school in the southeast Chinese city of Nanjing. But Wang Xia is not the only senior citizen taking the exam this year. With the adoption this year of a new government policy that lifts age restrictions on college entrance, thousands of people who missed out on a college education are vying for this opportunity. Ten of them are over the age of 60. And they do have a chance. Colleges and universities across the country plan to enroll a record number of 2.5 million students this autumn, more than half of the 4.5 million people taking the exam. The percentage of examinees from rural areas is nearly equal to that of examinees from urban areas. |
