BOC Steps Up Construction of Global Unified IT Platform

The Bank of China (BOC), one of the country's big four state banks, said Sunday it had trimmed its domestic information centers from 1040 to 110 by the end of May, more than fulfilling the projected target of downsizing the centers to 156.

The BOC was suffering from a low information sharing rate due to the incompatibility of its technological platform and application software, a spokesman with the bank said.

The IT centralization program is a strategic measure taken by BOC to prepare for China's impending entry into the World Trade Organization, he said.

The program will help structure a complete and unified platform for building the BOC's information system and back up the entire process of scientific decision making.

In addition, it will better translate the principles of customer focus, market orientation and convenient services to clients, the spokesman added.

As a result, it will be possible for the sharing of technological resources within the bank and saving enormous costs by standardizing business processing and unifying technological norms.

To cater for the development of globalized banking and further improve its IT level, the spokesman said the BOC will set up three information processing centers in Asia, Europe and the Americas and cut back the number of domestic information centers to four by the end of May 2002.
