More Chinese Mainland Students to Study in Hong Kong

More students from the Chinese mainland may have the chance to study in Hong Kong, due to a new entrance policy. The Hong Kong SAR government announced Friday that the new policy is intended to encourage top mainland students to study in Hong Kong universities.

The Hong Kong government said that since August 1, students from China's mainland will be encouraged to study in Hong Kong universities. The number of entering students will not be limited to the present number of official scholarships. This means that students can go to Hong Kong by other means of support, including the financial aid of Hong Kong private organizations and business.

To attract more professional talent, the Hong Kong government also said that Chinese mainland students with a bachelor's degree or above from Hong Kong Universities after 1990 will be allowed to work in Hong Kong if they get hired for one year.

Meanwhile, the first job fair to help Hong Kong employers find Chinese mainland talents closed in the southeastern Chinese city of Guangzhou on Friday. The two-day event attracted nearly 3,000 applicants, most of whom specialized in the IT and financial fields, which are highly needed in Hong Kong. Forty-six people at the fair signed contracts with Hong Kong employees, at salaries ranging from 15,000 to 100,000 Hong Kong dollars a month.
