41 Policemen Killed by Guerrillas in Nepal

The underground ultra-leftist guerrillas killed at least 41 policemen Friday night in three separate attacks in western Nepal, the official RSS news agency said Saturday.

The guerrillas attacked the Bichaur police post in Lamjung district in western Nepal Friday night where 21 policemen including one police inspector were killed in the cross firing, RSS quoted police sources as saying.

Meanwhile, at least 10 policemen were killed by the guerrillas at Taruka police post in Nuwakot district, 80 km northwest of Kathmandu and at least 10 other policemen were killed in Bamitaxar of Gulmi district, about 260 km west of the capital, the police sources said.

The guerrillas also destroyed these police posts with bombs and looted some weapons, the sources said.

The guerrillas have launched five major attacks at police posts across the country in the last week, killing at least 51 people, mostly policemen, and kidnapping 34 policemen.

The underground rebels have planted bombs in various places of the capital in the last week, one of which exploding near the prime minister's residence, RSS said.

About 1,700 people, including policemen, guerrillas and civilians, have been killed since the guerrillas launched armed activities in 1996.
