HK Guangdong Community Marks 4th Anniversary of HK's Return to Motherland

More than 2,000 people from the Guangdong community in Hong Kong gathered Friday in Hong Kong to mark the 4th anniversary of the Hong Kong's return to the motherland.

Henry Fok Ying Tung, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), delivered a speech on the occasion hosted by the Federation of Hong Kong Guangdong Community Organizations Ltd.

Fok, who is also the director of the federation, highlighted the success of Hong Kong in carrying out the principles of "one country, two systems," "Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong" and a high degree of autonomy during the past four years.

The SAR government, led by Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa, shows its wisdom and capability in handling complicated situations and maintaining the economic prosperity and social stability, he said.

He said the Fortune Global Forum held in Hong Kong recently fully demonstrated that the "one country, two systems" principle is acknowledged worldwide and Hong Kong remains one of the most active and stable economies in the world.

In conclusion, Fok expressed his hope that the Hong Kong people will make joint efforts for Hong Kong's stability and a better future.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa said Hong Kong and Guangdong have maintained close economic links in the past two decades and witnessed continuous development since Hong Kong's return to the motherland.

To increase Hong Kong-Guangdong cooperation, Tung said he had just visited Guangdong and held friendly and effective talks with Guangdong Governor Lu Ruihua, and he expected a new look will appear in their cooperation.

Also present at the event were Jiang Enzhu, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, and Ji Peiding, commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the HKSAR.
