Iraq to Resume Oil Exports Shortly: AmbassadorAfter the UN Security Council adopted a resolution extending "oil-for-food" program for 150 days, Iraq will resume oil exports shortly, a ranking Iraqi diplomat said Thursday."Everything will be normalized," said Iraqi Ambassador Mohammed al-Douri before signing a memorandum of understanding with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. He indicated that there is only technical matters left before his country restores to a normal export level of some 2 million barrels a day. "Oil-for-food" is a UN humanitarian program which allows Iraq to export oil and buy civilian goods under UN supervision to offset the impact of the sanctions, imposed when Baghdad invaded Kuwait in August 1990. In protest against a US-British proposal of a package of new arrangements on Iraqi sanctions, which was reject by Iraq as " smart sanction," the oil-rich country switched off its oil export line on June 4. |
