Premier Zhu Calls on Developed Nations to Reduce Emission

Premier Zhu Rongji Meets British Guest
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji called on the developed countries to take concrete measures to reduce their emissions so as to realize the environmental return set in the Kyoto Protocol.

In a meeting Friday morning with visiting British Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott who is here to discuss the climate change issue, Zhu pointed out that developing countries suffer most from climate change.

Concrete measures taken by developed countries to promote technology transfer and capital assistance will be conducive to raising the capability and confidence of developing countries in dealing with climate change, added Zhu.

Prescott said Britain and the European Union (EU) believe that the Kyoto Protocol on climate change should be observed and hope that the meeting scheduled for July this year in Bonn will help the protocol take effect at an early date.

The EU will still be resolved to push for an approval of the protocol even if the United States does not approve of it, noted Prescott.

Zhu stated that the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and its Kyoto Protocol is a manifestation of the common will and interests of the international community on the climate change issue.

He stressed that it is in the interests of the entire international community to push the protocol to take effect at an early date.

The EU has made clear that it will ratify the protocol as soon as possible, which the Chinese side appreciates, said Zhu.

During the meeting, Zhu expressed his congratulations on the electoral success of the British Labor Party and Prescott's continuation of his post as deputy prime minister.

Zhu also asked Prescott to convey his congratulations and regards to Prime Minster Tony Blair.

Prescott passed on Blair's message to Zhu, in which Blair greets Zhu and introduces British government's position on the Kyoto Protocol.

Prescott made clear the British side's positive will to continue to develop its relations with China and it will further strengthen bilateral high-level exchanges.

He said that the British side is expecting the high-level visit from China to Britain later this year.

Zhu said that Sino-British relations have had a greater development in recent years with a continuous expansion of bilateral exchanges and cooperation.

There is a broad prospect for the development of bilateral relations, Zhu said.

Prescott's current China visit and Blair's message on furthering bilateral relations fully demonstrate that the British side attaches importance to the development of its relations with China, noted Zhu.

Voicing that the Chinese side attaches equal importance to the development of its long-term and stable partnership with Britain, Zhu said that China is ready to make concerted efforts with the British side to keep the good development momentum of bilateral ties and continuously strengthen bilateral dialogues and cooperation in various fields.
