China Says ROK's Move Conducive to Poultry Problem Settlement
China said Thursday that the announcement of the Republic of Korea (ROK) that it is partially resuming imports of poultry from China is conducive to the final settlement of the poultry ban problem.
On June 4, the ROK Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry imposed a ban on importing poultry from China, on the grounds that it had detected H5N1, a contagious bird flu, in duck meat imported from the Shanghai-based Daying Meat and Poultry Packing Company.
"There was not enough evidence to sustain the ban, which contravened relevant regulations regarding the ROK's imports of poultry meat from China," said Gao Yan, press spokeswoman for China's Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation.
She said China has taken notice of the ROK government's announcement July 5 that it is partially resuming the import of poultry meat from China.
"The Chinese side believes that the step taken by the ROK side will help the final settlement of the problem of China's exports of poultry meat to the ROK," she said.
Gao, however, added that China will continue to pay great attention to this incident and hopes that the ROK side take more positive measures to resolve the disputes through consultations so that the problem can be finally settled at an early date.
