Jiang to Visit Five European Countries

Chinese President Jiang Zemin will pay a state visit to the Russian Federation, the Republic of Belarus, the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Malta from July 15 to 25 at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation, President Alexander Lukashenko of the Republic of Belarus, President Vladimir Boronin of the Republic of Moldova, President Leonid Kuchma of Ukraine, and President Guido De Marco of Malta.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue made the announcement at a press conference here Thursday.

This is the first visit paid by the head of the state of China to the above-mentioned five European countries at the outset of the new century.

During his visit, President Jiang will have an extensive and in- depth exchange of views with leaders of the five countries on the development of the bilateral relations in the 21st century as well as regional and international issues of common interest, and sign a series of important documents of cooperation, Zhang said.

Jiang's visit will further promote the sound and stable development of the friendly relations and cooperation between China and the Russian Federation, the Republic of Belarus the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Malta in the new century, the spokeswoman said.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin's scheduled state visit to Belarus in July will play a "very important" role in the history of bilateral relationship, said Zhang Qiyue, spokeswoman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the regular press conference held Thursday.

Zhang said that the visit will further enhance the two country' s friendly, cooperative and mutually beneficial relationship in the new century.

Pointing to the successful visit to China by President of Belarus Alexander Grigorievich Lukashenko in April this year, Zhang noted that the current China-Belarus relationship is "very good".
