Chinese Defense Minister Meets PNG Counterpart

There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, said Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian Thursday.

During the talks with Kilroy Genia, defense minister of Papua New Guinea, Chi reaffirmed the one-China policy and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China.

"'Peaceful reunification' and 'One China, two systems' are Chinese government's basic guidelines in solving the Taiwan issue, but we would not undertake to renounce the use of force," he said.

Chi, who is also vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and a state councilor, told Genia that China always attaches great importance to the relations with Papua New Guinea, wishing to further the friendly cooperation between the two countries and the two armed forces.

Chi said that both developing countries located in the Asia- Pacific region, China and Papua New Guinea should develop healthy and stable bilateral relations, in accordance with the interests of the two peoples and the regional stability and security.

As an important part of the bilateral relations, the China- Papua New Guinea military ties have been developing smoothly in recent years, he noted. He believed that Genia's visit will promote the military exchanges and cooperation of the two countries. He also briefed Genia on China's foreign policy and defense policy.

"China opposes hegemonism and power politics", said Chi. Genia said that strengthening China-Papua New Guinea cooperation in all fields including the military field will contribute to the mutual understanding and trust, thereafter promoting the development of bilateral relations. He reaffirmed that Papua New Guinea sticks to the one-China policy, and that his country gives full support to China's early reunification.
