Typhoon Leaves One Dead, One Missing in GuangxiSources from the Guangxi regional flood and drought control headquarters said it rained hard in the region from early Monday through Tuesday, and rainfall in the coastal cities of Beihai, Qinzhou and Fangchenggang ranged from 237 mm to 290 mm. Rainfall in Nanning, the regional capital, was 209 mm. The water level of local rivers has been drastically driven up to danger levels by the heavy downpour. And 13 major reservoirs in the region have been set to discharge water. According to the sources, some 3.36 million people in Guangxi have been affected by the typhoon, the most serious in 30 years. The direct economic losses caused by the typhoon are estimated at 812 million yuan (about 978,000 U.S. dollars), including the destruction of 5,550 buildings, death of 250 heads of livestock, inundating of 149.5 hectares of cropland, as well as large number of agricultural facilities. Local Party and government authorities have placed great attention on disaster prevention and combating and have been trying hard to reduce the damages to the least possible. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) and armed police stationed in Guangxi have been sent to join the rescue work in the disaster- hit areas and aid residents engulfed by the flood water.
