NPC Chairman Speaks Highly of Jiang's Speech

The Leading Party Group of the Standing Committee of the 9th National People's Congress (NPC) held a meeting Tuesday to discuss and study the speech made by Jiang Zemin, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, at a grand gathering Sunday marking the 80th founding anniversary of the CPC.

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the NPC and a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC's Central Committee, presided over and addressed the meeting, speaking highly of Jiang's speech.

Li said that Jiang's speech is a programmatic document for carrying out socialist construction and pushing forward the Party's work in the new century.

The speech answered a number of important questions of wide concern which have appeared in the new historical conditions and involve enhancing and improving Party building work, Li said.

It also clearly illuminated the historical tasks and goals of the CPC in the new century, he added.

He asked NPC staff members to earnestly study the speech and to practise the "Three Represent's" thought, so as to do their work better.

The "Three Represent's" thought calls for the CPC to represent the development trend of China's advanced social productive forces, the orientation of China's advanced culture, and the fundamental interests of the overwhelming majority of the people of China.

Li described Jiang's speech as "rich in content, and profound in thought", and as a new development of Marxism, Mao Zedong Thought and Deng Xiaoping Theory.
