Chinese Sauce Exporter Claims Counterfeit

A Chinese sauce exporter Tuesday defended its sauce products against British cancer claims, and announced that its product brand name "Zhujiang Qiao" (Pearl River Bridge) had been counterfeited.

The British Food Standards Agency last month said that some sauces, including the "Zhujiang Qiao" brand exported by China's Guangdong Foodstuffs Import and Export Corporation (GFIEC), were found to contain high levels of 3-MCPD, a chemical suspected of being linked to liver cancer.

"After careful investigation, we found that the four Zhujiang Qiao brand samples made public by Britain's Food Standards Agency as unqualified products were all fake products," said a spokesman from the GFIEC in a statement.

The spokesman said that Zhujiang Qiao is an internationally renowned brand created some 45 years ago, and it has been well accepted by more than 80 countries and regions worldwide.

"The real Zhujiang Qiao brand sauces are made in accordance with traditional Chinese recipes, and don't contain any 3-MCPD," the spokesman said.
