Typhoon Lashes Western Guangdong Province

Nearly three million people in the western part of south China's Guangdong Province felt the effects of a severe typhoon and rainstorm Monday, with direct losses of 3.7 billion yuan (about US$446 million).

The typhoon, called "civet durian", hit Zhanjiang City at three o'clock Monday morning, and the heaviest rainfall in the city reached 168.8 mm.

The local authorities disclosed that about 2.95 million people in 109 towns in Zhanjiang City suffered from "civet durian', which is the third such weather front this year.

Water and power supply, traffic and part of the telecommunications network were cut off due to the typhoon. Local governments are now making efforts to restore these services.
