Top Legislator Li Peng on Environmental Protection
China must protect the ecological environment and control pollution in accordance with laws, Chinese top legislator Li Peng said Monday.

Li, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) and member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, made the remark at a meeting held by the NPC's Committee on Environmental Protection and Resources.

Xie Zhenhua, director of the State Environmental Protection Administration, and some experts of environmental protection gave reports on China's environmental protection at the meeting.

They said that the environmental protection situation in China remains serious although progress has been made in pollution control, and the trend of ecological degradation has not yet been brought under effective control.

After hearing the reports, Li said that environmental protection is a work that closely linked with China's future prosperity and the fate of the nation, and the governments at all levels should further increase their investments in this area and various units in society should be encouraged to make a contribution.

He asked the people's congresses at all levels to improve legislation work on environmental protection and to make a better legal system for this work.
