China's Top Legislator Meets US Guests
Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC), met Monday with a delegation from the U.S. House of Representatives headed by Representative Clay Shan and President of the US-Asia Foundation Richard Quick.
Li said that China is the largest developing country and the United States is the biggest developed country, so the friendly coexistence of the two nations benefits the two peoples and helps promote world peace and stability.
On the Sino-U.S. relations, Li said, the statemen of the two countries, including the parliament members, should be far-sighted. China and the United States indeed have differences, he noted, but they also share common interests, which transcend the differences.
He noted that the two countries have the responsibility for safeguarding the peace and stability of the Asia-Pacific region, and promoting regional economic growth and prosperity, and should work jointly on cracking down on transnational problems like drug trafficking and terrorism. Such cooperation will become the foundation for Sino-U.S. relations of mutual benefit.
Li said China values the important role of the U.S. Congress, adding that he hoped it would play a positive function in promoting bilateral ties.
Chinese and U.S. legislators have conducted fruitful dialogues since a group was set up in 1999 to promote contacts between the two parliaments, and the two sides were able to promote understanding and common consensus, he said, voicing his hope that the Chinese NPC and the U.S. Congress would strengthen the exchanges of visit.
Clay Shan said that contact between the legislators of the two countries is beneficial for promoting mutual understanding and cooperation, which is the very aim of his current visit.
He said he hopes to make his own contribution to the improvement of Sino-U.S. relations through the visit.
