Unemployment Rate Stands at 6.4 Percent in Macao From March to May

The unemployment rate was 6.4 percent in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) from March to May this year, according to a sample survey made by the Statistics and Census Services of the SAR government Sunday.

The figure inched up by 0.1 percentage points from the February- April period, but went down 0.6 percentage points from the same 2000 period.

In the March-May period, Macao had a labor force of 218,000, accounting for 50.2 percent of its total population and including 204,000 employees and 14,000 jobless people, the survey shows.

The sectors reporting more employees include domestic service, transportation, storage, telecommunications, real estate, renting and manufacturing, while the employment situation became even worse in the industries of construction and hotel.

The building and manufacturing industries still experienced a shortage of employees in the three-month period, the source said.
