Yellow River Reservoir Increases Water Supply to Lower Reaches
The Xiaolangdi Reservoir, one of the major water control projects on the Yellow River in central China's Henan Province, ceased power generation power on Saturday to increase water supply to the lower reaches.
Officials with the project said they shut down No. 5 and 6 generation units as the water level fell below 205 meters in the reservoir.
Faced with severe drought, the reservoir had to close No. 3 and 4 units early this month and so far, all the units have stopped operation.
As the drought goes on, the dam will probably continue for some period to let the water go to the lower reaches, said the officials, and the units will stay shut.
The project is the largest of its kind on the Yellow River, and second only to the Three Gorges project on the Yangtze River in terms of workload.
It aims at preventing floods and ice run and reduction of silt deposits. It will also have functions of water supply, irrigation and power generation.
To date, four power generation units are available at the project, which is still under construction and scheduled for total completion by the end of this year.
