China to Sponsor Finance, Development Project at APEC FMM

Chinese Finance Minister Xiang Huaicheng will sponsor a project on finance and development at the eighth APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) Finance Ministers Meeting (FMM) scheduled for September 8-9 in Suzhou City of Jiangsu Province, east China, an official said Friday.

This project is aimed at promoting financial cooperation among APEC economies and improving their capacity building, said Deputy Finance Minister Jin Liqun who is also chairman of the eighth APEC FMM Finance and Central Bank Deputies Meeting.

Jin is here to attend the 12th APEC FMM technical working group meeting, which convened Friday.

In an interview with Xinhua, Jin said the proposed project will have a test period of three years for seminars, subject studies and personnel training in a bid to raise the financial development capabilities of APEC economies.

This project will be sponsored as an echo to Chinese President Jiang Zemin's proposal for enhancing economic and technological cooperation and capacity building within financial spheres, Jin said.

With the consensus of all APEC economies and approved by the eighth FMM, the project will be submitted to the APEC informal leadership meeting, scheduled for this October in Shanghai, for consideration.

The Chinese government will be ready to allocate special funds for the project, and welcome the participation of all the member economies and the private sector and their financial support, said Jin.

Through different forms of training, financial officials and business people of all APEC economies can strengthen exchanges and learn from each other so as to apply what they have learned to reality, Jin added.
