TOM.com Aligns with China Unicom, Netcom

TOM.com, a cross media portal under Hutchison Whampoa Ltd, announced Thursday a partnership with four ISPs (Internet services provider) including China Unicom, China Netcom to better its Internet access services.

The alignment with China Unicom, China Netcom, 263.net and Guangdong Gosun Network Science & Technology Company Ltd will enable TOM to provide for its subscribers four channels to hook up to Internet.

The four ISPs charge differently for their dail-up services and TOM subscribers may switch ISPs for the best price.

Wang Xian, TOM's president, said: "The alignment is one step further towards TOM goal of combining Internet content with access services."

TOM, which started as a media portal in October 1999, tapped the ISP market in March 2001 by rolling out an dial-up access service.

To attract more pay users, TOM offers its subscribers online games and its 163.net mailbox services which TOM started charging non-subscribers from June 28.
