Section of Expressway Opens to Traffic

A section of expressway connecting Beijing and Kaifeng, a major city in central China's Henan Province, opens Thursday to traffic.

The section, over 42 kilometers and mainly in the suburbs of Beijing, costs some 2.7 billion yuan (325 million U.S. dollars). Vehicles can drive on the expressway at speeds between 80 and 120 kph.

The expressway, part of a national road linking Beijing and Guangzhou in south China, is believed to relieve the heavy transportation of the country's capital and enhance its ties with Hebei, Shandong and Henan province.

Sources show that Beijing will construct 400 kilometers of expressways in the next five years, which will triple its present 216 kilometers, resulting in a large and efficient expressway network.
