Beijing to Invest 200 Billion to Improve Traffic Network and Environment

This Chinese capital has decided to invest 180 billion yuan (21.7 billion US dollars) in the next five years to build more roads, railways, sewage processing plants and pipe lines, a senior officials said.

The city will build both over and underground railways to lengthen its rail system to 138 km, 85 km longer than the length in 2000.

The city is also planing to build the fifth and sixth ring roads during the period, and improve expressway networks around its international airport.

To protect the environment, the city will build a second pipeline to transmit natural gas from north China's Shannxi Province, increasing its gas supply to between 3 billion and 4 billion cubic meters in 2005.

The city will build six more sewage processing plants in its outskirts, increasing its sewage processing capacity to 1 million cubic meters daily and its sewage processing rate to 90 percent.
