Bangladeshi Government Rejects TI's Report on Corruption

The Bangladeshi government Wednesday rejected the Transparency International report on corruption rating, saying it has no basis and is highly motivated.

"We reject this report as the non-governmental organization's study had not made it clear on what scientific basis it carried its poll. Bangladesh's image has been maligned," a government spokesman told newsmen.

The spokesman said the report is highly motivated on the eve of general elections due by October.

Charging that there is a worldwide corruption crisis, the Transparency International named Bangladesh as the most corrupt nation and Finland as the least, in its yearly corruption perceptions index released Wednesday.

The report, solely based on perceptions and information fed by international organizations, corporate executives and intellectuals, said Finland is the least corrupt country.
