Huge Investment to Pour into Beijing Water Resource DevelopmentThe central government and the Beijing municipal government have decided to spend a total of 22 billion yuan (2.6 billion U.S.) dollars to ease water shortages in the capital city within five years.According to a plan for the city's sustainable utilization and development of water resources in the early years of the 21st century, the investment will be used for development and protection of water resources and prevention of pollution for two major reservoirs in the city. The plan, jointly drafted by the Beijing municipal government and the Ministry of Water Resources, is aimed at guaranteeing the basic balance of supply and demand of water resources in the capital. Beijing is to focus on in-depth development and optimized deployment of local water resources, and the protection and improvement of water resources in the upper reaches of the Miyun and Guanting reservoirs, the two major sources of water supply of the city. According to the plan, a total of 20 projects will be launched in next five years for water resource development, pollution protection, rain and flood water utilization, building of water- saving and ecological agricultural development around the reservoir areas and water quality monitoring. |
