China Willing to Enhance Dialogs with US: FM

China attaches importance to its relations with the US, hoping to forge constructive and cooperative relations with the US, Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan said Thursday.

Tang made the remark in a phone call with the US Secretary of State Colin Powell at the request of the US side.

Tang said that they have exchanged letters this year and kept close contact on bilateral ties and international issues.

He said he will be pleased to meet Powell in Hanoi next month and exchange views on Sino-US relations and other issues of common concern during Powell's subsequent visit to Beijing.

He said he is also pleased to see that the bilateral ties have seen improvement recently after experiencing difficulties previously.

China is willing to strengthen dialogs and cooperation with the US side, enhance understanding and trust, actively make preparations for the meeting between Chinese President Jiang Zemin and US President Bush in Shanghai and Bush's visit to Beijing in October, so as to promote the healthy and steady development of bilateral ties, he noted.

Powell, on his part, agreed with Tang on the importance of Sino- U.S. relations, extending willingness to keep close touch with Tang.

Powell said that the undesired twists and turns in the development of bilateral relations have become history and he would be glad to meet Tang in Hanoi and accompany President Bush to visit China this fall.

The two also exchanged views on the issues concerning Iraq.
