Germany "Satisfied" With International Court's Ruling Against US

The German government is "highly satisfied" with the ruling of the International Court in The Hague on the Lagrand case, a German official said on Wednesday.

The ruling strengthens the rights of Germans and other nationals in a third country, said Andreas Michaelis, a spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry.

Earlier in the day, the International Court announced its ruling that the United States violated the Vienna Convention by not informing timely the German government of the case of Karl and Walter Lagrand.

The two German brothers were executed in the U.S. state of Arizona in 1999 after they were convicted of murdering a bank employee in a 1982 robbery in the United States.

The German government, which learned the case in 1992, has since brought its suit to The Hague court, accusing the United States of violating international laws on consular affairs.
