Thai SMEs Keen to Make Headway in China: Report

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Thailand are pursuing lucrative opportunities to supply Thai-made products to China, especially Shanghai, the Bangkok Post reported Wednesday.

Mall Asia Co., a subsidiary of the well-known Charoen Pokphand Group, told a recent seminar that by helping small firms sell their products to China without business risks, it could overcome some obstacles in the entry to the Chinese market.

Somkit Tantad, the company's chief executive, said that under Mall Asia's program of operating a super-store in Shanghai, small Thai firms could sell their products by consignment, on a free-on-board basis, and business with potential in the Chinese market included frozen food, canned food, fruit, leather, fashion, jewelry and Thai silk.

Lots of Thai SMEs have expressed their interests to join Mall Asia's Shanghai program, including S.Khonkaen Food Industry, Malee Sampran, Sabina Fareast, Bangkok Gems, the Association of Thai Leather Products, and vegetable and fruit traders, he said.

S.Khonkae Food, a sausage maker, said the company's products fetched twice as much in China as in Thailand.

At a separate event in Bangkok, the Export Promotion Department sought SMEs' views on expanding investment and trade with China, saying that China's entry into the World Trade Organization would improve its trade with Thailand, expanding markets and overcoming

problems.
