US, South African Presidents Meet at White House

US President George W. Bush met with visiting South African President Thabo Mbeki at the White House on Tuesday to discuss bilateral and regional issues of mutual concern.

In a photo opportunity with the media prior to their meeting, President Bush welcomed the South African leader, saying that both sides have a lot of interests to discuss, especially bilateral trade and issues on the African continent.

President Mbeki, who met Bush in May in Austin, Texas, agreed that this time they will look into the matter of bilateral relations as well as issues on the wider scale.

"The moment has come for us as Africans really to turn the corner, to deal with all of these problems of violence and conflict and poverty, disease and so on," Mbeki said.

In response to a question from reporters, both leaders noted that the AIDS scourge on the African continent will be an important part of their dialogue.
