156 Liberian Refugees Sent to Refugee Camp in Nigeria
One hundred and fifty-six Liberian passengers boarding a Swedish-registered vessel Tuesday were immediately transferred into 10 buses to a refugee camp at Oru in Nigeria's southern Ogun State after they landed in Lagos port earlier in the day.
Expressing appreciation of the Nigerian government for granting them refuge, the refugees, looking pale and unkempt, have ended a nightmare voyage on high seas for almost a month since they escaped the clashes between Liberian government forces and rebels in the northern Lofa county.
According to the Nigerian Red Cross Society, the refugees were provided foods and medications in coordination with other agencies, such as the United Nations Children's Fund and the Nigeria Ports Authority medical team.
The refugees were denied entry by the governments of Ghana, Togo and Benin before Nigeria Monday finally offered to accept them on humanitarian grounds.
