Three Chinese Nurses Presented Florence Nightingale Medal

President Jiang Zemin Meets Florence Nightingale Medal Winners
Three Chinese nurses, Wu Jinghua, Wang Yaping and Li Qiujie received the 38th Florence Nightingale Medal Tuesday from Chinese President Jiang Zemin, honorary chairman of the Red Cross Society of China.

Speaking at the awarding ceremony, Vice Premier Li Lanqing congratulated the three nurses for winning the awards by the International Committee of Red Cross for nurses that have been distinguished in the humanitarian cause worldwide.

He called the three nurses "distinguished representatives" of Chinese nurses, who have contributed greatly to China's medical and health services, and called on all nurses and Red Cross workers nationwide to learn from their examples.

The vice-premier also praised the Red Cross Society of China for its important contribution and indispensable role in relief efforts during natural disasters and accidents.

Peng Peiyun, president of the Red Cross Society of China, also extended her congratulations in her speech.

She noted that 28 Chinese nurses have won the Florence Ningtingale Medal since 1983, when China started to take part in the event.

Award winner, Wu Jinghua, has worked as a nurse for 48 years in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in northwest China and is currently vice-president of the Ningxia Nursing Society.

Wang Yaping, a nurse for 40 years, is now deputy director of the Emergency Center of the Beijing Municipal Red Cross Society.

The third award winner, Li Qiujie is the chief nurse at the No. 2 Hospital affiliated to Harbin University of Medicine.

Florence Nightingale, a national heroine in the United Kingdom, was the pioneer of modern nursing. The Florence Nightingale Medal, established at the Ninth International Red Cross Conference in Washington in 1912, is presented every two years.
