Unicom Ties up with State Post to Expand Service NetworkChina Unicom Ltd's parent China United Telecommunications Corp expects to attract 10 million new users over the next year in in a tie-up with Chinese postal authorities, a report said Tuesday.China Unicom chairman Yang Xianzu said parent China United Telecommunications Corp would use 80,000 marketing outlets of the State Post Bureau to sell its services, the Hong Kong Economic Times said. Yang said China Unicom, which currently has some 3,000 marketing outlets, is expected to get about half of the expected 10 million new users, with the parent company having the rest. China Unicom is expecting to build the world's largest code division multiple access (CDMA) mobile phone network by the end of 2004 with 50 million subscribers. It currently operates CDMA networks in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Xi'an and Guangzhou with just 550,000 customers. Including its extensive global system for mobile communications (GSM) networks, China Unicom had a total subscriber base of 18.46 million at the end of May. China's largest mobile operator China Mobile has grown its subscriber base by 25 percent to 56.6 million users so far this year. China has 105 million mobile phone users and adds more than 1 million new subscribers every week, according to statistics from the ministry of information industry. |
