China Police Launch Campaign Against DrugsChinese police forces launched extensive attacks to crack down on drug abuse and trafficking on Tuesday, which is the International Day against Drug Abuse.In the southern island province of Hainan, the local court condemned eight people to death for drug trafficking and trading. They were executed Tuesday. Police in Kunming, capital of southwest province of Yunnan, which borders the world's key drug producing area "Golden Triangle, " burnt 2,000 kilograms of heroin confiscated over the past months to show the authorities determination in fighting against drugs. Asia's largest drug education base was opened for use on Tuesday in Guiyang, capital of southwest province of Guizhou neighboring Yunnan, with a total investment of 13 million yuan (1. 6 million US dollars) and covering 3,400 square meters including 3, 000 square meters for exhibition. In the south coastal province of Fujian, local authorities brought into full play of people's forces fighting against drugs through various programs combined the efforts of police and the general public's participation, detaining 3,300 drug criminals and seizing 7,600 kilograms of drugs and drug-related chemicals over the past 17 months since 2000. An anti-drug volunteers' team was formed Tuesday in Beijing, Chinese capital, to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse. Its founding ceremony was attended by government officials and drug officials from foreign embassies, including the Minister of Public Security, Jia Chunwang. The city now has 700 volunteers in its 18 administrative districts and counties.
