130 people Injured in Turkish Earthquake

A total of 130 people were brought to hospital after a 5.5-magnitude earthquake jolted the southern province of Osmaniye Monday afternoon, reported the Anatolia News Agency on Tuesday.

Most of the people were injured when they jumped out of their windows or from balconies in panic in the earthquake.

According to hospital sources, 33 of them suffered from broken bones while others were discharged after receiving medical care at outpatient clinic of the Osmaniye State Hospital.

Officials said that damage assessment centers were set up at the city, town and village levels.

Preliminary reports said that 64 houses had been damaged and two mosques also suffered damages.

Meanwhile, three aftershocks, measuring 3.1, 3.9 and 3.3 on the Richter scale, were recorded on Monday night, said a report by the Kandilli Observatory and Seismology Institute of the Istanbul-based Bogazici University.

Osmaniye is known to lie on an active faultline in southern Turkey. In June 1998, the nearby city of Adana was struck by a 6.3- magnitude quake, which killed 144 people.
