Chinese Farmer to Take Long March

Farmer Shi Guoming from northeast Chinas Jilin Province plans to take the Long March in the next 14 months in a bid to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

In 1934, Kuomintang troops laid siege to all the revolutionary bases, the Red Army had to retreat from the eastern region to the sparsely-populated western region, where the Kuomintang had a comparatively weaker presence. This was later known as the Long March.

Shi Guoming, 51, a member of the CPC, lives in Shonghuajiang Town, Dehui City of Jilin Province. He has been preparing for his Long March taking plan for years.

He left his hometown yesterday after a grand send-off ceremony from his fellow villagers.
