Pavarotti Supports Beijing's Bidding for Olympics

Opera superstar Luciano Pavarotti said at a press conference Monday in Hong Kong that he firmly supports Beijing's bidding for the 2008 Olympic Games.

"If I could vote, I will certainly vote Beijing for the right place for the Olympic Games," said Pavarotti, who arrived in Hong Kong Monday afternoon for a concert after an 11-year absence.

His solo concert was set for Wednesday, June 27, 2001 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center. An audience of about 8, 000 people are expected to be present.

Beijing is one of the most pleasant places around the world, but it has never been an Olympic city, he said. "It should be an Olympic city like other cities elsewhere in the world," he added.

Pavarotti said he was well-entertained in Beijing and had a very friendly chat with Chinese President Jiang Zemin during his stay in the city.

On Saturday, the three tenors performed before at least 30,000 music lovers in the courtyard of the Meridian Gate in the ancient Forbidden City.
