Chinese Company to Repair Parts of NR3 in Cambodia

The China Geo- Engineering Corporation will help Cambodia repair parts of National Route 3 (NR3) from Veal Rinh to Trapang Ropouv, 180 kilometers southeast of Phnom Penh, by the loan provided by the World Bank.

At the ground breaking ceremony of the road rehabilitation presided over by Prime Minister Hun Sen Monday, Khy Tainglim, minister of Public Works and Transport, said that the Chinese construction company has won the bid to repair parts of NR3 with the total length of 21.5 kilometers with construction cost of about 6.5 million U.S. dollars.

The construction of the road, together with rehabilitation of existing 15 bridges and 23 culverts along the road, is planned to be completed in February 2003, under the technical supervision of the Pacific Consultant International Company.

Prime Minister Hun Sen said that national roads can benefit the growth of national economy, especially development of rural areas, so this mandate term of the government would focus on construction of national roads.

He noted that after the construction of the remaining parts of national route 3 from Phnom Penh to Kep town, 176 kilometers south of Phnom Penh, which is expected to be rehabilitated by loan from South Korea, NR3 will link Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia, Kampot, southern Cambodia, Sihanoukville city, southeastern Cambodia, Cambodia's only deep-water seaport.
