Chile Shock China at World Youth Championships

China suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at the hands of bottom-table Chile in their Group C match at the World Youth (under-20) Football Championships Saturday.

The win was the first for the South Americans in what has been a lacklustre tournament where they had lost their previous two outings and were stuck to the bottom of the table.

But the result was too little too late for the Chilean side who fail to advance to the final 16.

The Chilean victory however secures the United States' qualification after they drew 1-1 against top table Ukraine earlier Saturday.

The USA finished equal on points but ahead on goals with China, who have already secured their place in the next round.

China's record in three matches has been a win, a loss and a draw. After coming away 1-0 winners over the United States in their first match, they drew 0-0 against the Ukraine.

But as in their previous ties Shen Xiangfu's men stuck to their tried and trusted tactic of ultra-defensive play which failed to pay dividends this time.

The match played in cold conditions on front of 6,500 spectators was more of a display of Chilean football skill.

Despite being pinned back by their opponents the Chileans managed to open up the game following good work by Jaime Valdes and Sebastian Pardo.

The winning goal game in the 43rd minute when Gonzalo Villagra passed to Mario Berrios and he slotted home with a shot into the right hand side of the net.

Chile had the only sending off in the match with Adan Vergara red-carded just before the final whistle.
