Wahid Lands in Australian City After Plane Mechanical Difficulties

The aircraft carrying Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid on his visit to Australia Monday morning landed in Darwin, northern Australia, with mechanical difficulties.

Wahid was expected to arrive in Canberra at 0930 (Australian East Standard Time) after a short stop-off in Sydney.

But an Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokeswoman said Wahid's military plane had to land at the Royal Australia Air Force base in Darwin at about 0600 with mechanical difficulties.

"We are awaiting reports to assess the damage and then we will look at options for the day," the spokeswoman said.

While in Australia, Wahid is scheduled to meet Governor-General William Deane, Prime Minister John Howard, Opposition Leader Kim Beazley, New South Wales state Premier Bob Carr and Northern Territory Chief Minister Denis Burke.
