International Drug Control Day Observed in Macao

More than 1,600 Macao people paraded up and down the street to express their anti-narcotics wishes Sunday, on the eve of the International Drug Control Day, which falls on June 26.

The paraders, from more than 50 local social groups, held slogans and sang songs to introduce the harm of drug to the local people and urge the young people in particular to stay away from narcotics, while beating drums and brandishing lions.

The walking, with the theme of "Cherish Your Life, Live in Rainbow", aims to call on everyone to shoulder the responsibility of fighting against narcotics and build a drug-free society, said an official from the Social Welfare Institute of the special administrative region (SAR).

In the coming few days, the SAR government will hold a series of anti-drug activities, such as exhibitions and games. A special government report, titled "Anti-Narcotics Campaign in Macao (1991- 2000)", will be published on July 12.

The Social Welfare Institute will participate in an anti-drug conference in Human, in south China's Guangdong Province, to discuss cooperation among Hong Kong, Macao and Guangdong to crack down on drug crimes.
