Huge Brain Tumor Removed in Tianjin

Chinese doctors with Tianjin Municipal Tumor Hospital has successfully removed a four centimeter by five centimeter brain tumor from a 67-year-old patient.

Doctors said the brain was first found at the left base of the skull of Gao Jie, who complained of dizziness one month back.

Further diagnosis revealed that the tumor was close to the brain stem which had been squeezed by a half. An mistake in the surgery would cause problems including hemiparalysis and failure of the brain stem in the patient or even complications that would endanger the life of the patient, they said.

Doctor Li Wenliang, also head of the hospital's Craniocerebral Tumor Section, was brave enough to lead a team to conduct the operation.

The operation lasted about eight hours, with the tumor being fully removed and the cranial nerves well preserved. About two weeks after the operation, the patient has been recovering rapidly at the hospital and there have been no ill effects to the patient as a result of the surgery.
