Liaoning to Ban Use of Polluting Fuels

Filling stations in Liaoning Province, northeast China, will stop the sale of polluting petrol or diesel that does not have cleansers added, starting July 1.

According to the provincial bureau of quality and technical supervision, the government demands that fuel sold at all the stations must be added with cleaners certified by the environmental protection authority.

All the filling stations must also purchase filter equipment that can get rid of colloid and other impurities in diesel oil, according to the government order issued Friday.

Institutions and individuals who fail to observe the order and cause pollution of the environment will be penalized according to law, the bureau said.

Similar measures have been taken by Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and other Chinese cities to curb pollution caused by their increasing number of motor vehicles.

Tests by the environmental protection authorities show that petrol added with cleansers could reduce carbon monoxide and other pollutant discharges by motor vehicles by 50 percent.
