Official Calls for Confidence in Reaching Exports GoalState Councilor Wu Yi urged related departments to be aware of the stern international situation for China's exports and be confident in realizing the annual targets for export growth. After hearing reports by officials attending a conference on export work in 15 of China's provinces and cities Friday, Wu said that export is of vital importance to the country's economic development. She called for greater efforts to increase exports, stressing it is both a major way for China to participate in globalization and international cooperation and competition and a practical driving force behind the country's economic growth. Although the external environment for China's exports may become even more complicated, there is still room and potential for the country and different localities to increase exports, the official said. To reach the 8 percent growth set for the year's exports is completely possible if hard efforts are exerted, she noted. Wu called for greater efforts to increase the exports of new and high technologies and products, electrical and machinery products in particular. While consolidating traditional markets like the United States, Japan and Asean nations, greater efforts should be made to explore the potential of foreign markets in Middle East, Eastern Europe and Africa, she said. According to official figures, in the first five months of the year, China's exports and imports stood at US$197.68 billion, comprising US$102.5 billion in exports and US$95. 18 billion in imports, up 11 percent and 16.3 percent, respectively, over the corresponding period of last year. |
